We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your child into Year 1. Our half-termly newsletters will inform you of our topics and the areas we will be covering, as well as any additional information you need to know.

Please feel free to come and speak to us about how your child is settling in, developments you would like to share or any concerns you have. If this is a quick message, a member of staff on the door in the morning will be happy to pass it on to your child’s teacher, or please catch us at the end of the day. If it is something that will need longer, please make an appointment for a more convenient time. As you can appreciate mornings are very busy but we do want to hear from you and will do our very best to contact you the same day. Home/School link books are checked every day, but it is always worth asking your child to let us know if there is a message inside that we need to read.

Our regular PE Days this year are Tuesday and Thursday for all classes. On these days, please send your child in their school PE kit and school jumper. As the weather gets cooler, plain dark joggers or leggings can also be worn. Please can you make sure any earrings are taken out before school on PE days and that long hair is tied up, thank you. We ask that children wear a pair of trainers rather than plimsolls on their feet on their PE days.

Please can we remind you to make sure all your child’s items of clothing are named, particularly cardigans and sweatshirts.  If your child does come home with clothing that doesn’t belong to them please return it as soon as possible.

This will be set each Thursday and will consist of a variety of tasks linked to our work in class. We use Microsoft TEAMS to share, submit and feedback on tasks, and will provide a Homework Book for your child to record any written tasks which you can then photograph and upload. Further information on your child’s learning in Year 1 and how you can support them at home can be found in the front of the Home School Link book. If your child needs a new home learning books as they have completed the previous book, please contact your child’s teacher to request a new one. If there are any problems, please speak with a member of staff. Thank you for your support with this. Your child will be awarded a dojo for each Weekend Learning Task they complete.

Children can change their reading book on any day as long as there is evidence in the Home/School link book that it has been read twice. The children are asked to read their books twice to encourage expression and fluency, and to improve comprehension. Home reading book levels are determined by half-termly phonics assessments and should match closely your child’s phonic knowledge. Listening to your child read daily and talking about the book will have a real impact on their progress. Our expectation is that children will read at home for at least 10 minutes, at least four times a week; your child will be awarded a dojo each time they read at home.

We hope to resume our reading activities with parents soon. Every half term there is a week when we invite you in to school to come and read with your child between 3pm & 3:10pm. Reading week is usually the third week of each half term, but check the newsletters as this does occasionally change.

There is an emphasis on phonics during Year 1.  This will lead to a phonics screening check in June to confirm whether individual children have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard. Each child will be provided with a phonics pack at the start of the year to support practice at home.

If you are able to assist us on any trips or walks that we may plan during the year, please let us know and we will arrange the for the office to organise DBS clearance.

Thank you for your continued support.

The Year One team.
